Jesus, Friend of Sinners

We read in John 4, the women at the well went to great lengths to stay away from people because they made it a habit to remind her of the junk in her life and ridicule her for it. She then meets Jesus who calls her out on this. Immediately after meeting Jesus she dropped her bucket at the well, ran into town and told the others to meet a man who told her everything she’s ever done. What’s amazing is that because of Jesus she confronts the very people who ridiculed her, she literally runs to them to say come see a guy who told me all about my dirty laundry. When you look at those verses you realize that what she was saying was “come see a man who told me all that I’ve ever done and it’s okay, he knows all of it yet loves me how I am.” We talk about how we can come to Jesus right now, wherever we are but when we get out in the world today we’ve got this idea that to love people like Jesus means you can’t tell them anything that might offend or threaten the relationship, we can’t get into anyone’s business even if it is to help. I’ll just tell you this, everything that Jesus ever said or did was totally against modern culture but everything Jesus ever said or did was totally for people. What he showed us is that you can love people with truth, as a matter of fact it is impossible to love people without it. We live in a time where we love our friendship more than we love our friend. we don’t want to threaten this thing that we got by telling them they might be running off a cliff soon so we stay away because we don’t want to judge anybody. However, when we look at scripture we see we can love people with truth.

This weeks song Jesus, Friend of Sinner by Casting Crowns breaks all conceptions that because Jesus was a friend to sinners he didn’t care what they did, he cared what they did, he died for what they did. Jesus never felt the pleasure of sin, only the pain of it.. literally. He knows what sin does but he was a friend to them and met them where they were, that’s why he was a friend to sinners.

Lyrics:
Jesus, friend of sinners, we have strayed so far away
We cut down people in your name but the sword was never ours to swing
Jesus, friend of sinners, the truth’s become so hard to see
The world is on their way to You but they’re tripping over me
Always looking around but never looking up I’m so double minded
A plank eyed saint with dirty hands and a heart divided

Oh Jesus, friend of sinners
Open our eyes to the world at the end of our pointing fingers
Let our hearts be led by mercy
Help us reach with open hearts and open doors
Oh Jesus, friend of sinners, break our hearts for what breaks yours

Yeah…

Jesus, friend of sinners, the one who’s writing in the sand
Made the righteous turn away and the stones fall from their hands
Help us to remember we are all the least of these
Let the memory of Your mercy bring Your people to their knees
Nobody knows what we’re for only what we’re against when we judge the wounded
What if we put down our signs crossed over the lines and loved like You did

Oh Jesus, friend of sinners
Open our eyes to world at the end of our pointing fingers
Let our hearts be led by mercy
Help us reach with open hearts and open doors
Oh Jesus, friend of sinners, break our hearts for what breaks yours

You love every lost cause; you reach for the outcast
For the leper and the lame; they’re the reason that You came
Lord I was that lost cause and I was the outcast
But you died for sinners just like me, a grateful leper at Your feet

‘Cause You are good, You are good and Your love endures forever
You are good, You are good and Your love endures forever
You are good, You are good and Your love endures forever
You are good, You are good and Your love endures forever

Oh Jesus, friend of sinners
Open our eyes to world at the end of our pointing fingers
Let our hearts be led by mercy
Help us reach with open hearts and open doors
Oh Jesus, friend of sinners, break our hearts for what breaks Yours

And I was the lost cause and I was the outcast
Yeah…
You died for sinners just like me, a grateful leper at Your feet

  1. I love this posting. It is so true that we love friendship more than our friends sometimes. Im going to pray for God to help me be the best kind of friend, one who loves and speaks freely in His love! great post!
