Mary, Did You Know?

Here’s another week of Christmas inspired music. Happy MONDAY!

Luke 1:26-38 – Mary, Did You Know?

Today we are continuing our series on the Christmas season, this time looking at faith for the season. In the Christmas story told in Matthew and Luke, there are times when people are told specifically not to be afraid. We hear stories about Zechariah, an old man, and how he was terrified when the heavenly messenger came to him. Mary however, a young teenage girl, wasn’t terrified.

The angel shared good news with Mary. He said she was highly favoured, that God had chosen her to be part of His wonderful plans. The angel told her God was with her and most certainly it was something Mary needed to know as she would be facing some great changes.

Changes is hard. Positive change we generally welcome; a better job, a new relationship, improvement of some kind in our lives. But with change comes its difficulties.

Now, picture Mary’s change. She was engaged to a good man, Joseph. They were going to be married and then out of no where an angel showed up and told her she was going to have a baby. Let’s pause there for a moment. Even if girls got married as teenagers back then, and it was expected, you tell her she’s pregnant out of wedlock, too. Then it was considered sinful.

As if that weren’t enough. As if hearing the news that you were going to have a baby isn’t life-changing enough. Throw in the fact that it was impossible for her. She was a virgin. She has never been with a man. Now, that’s even more of a shock.

If it still doesn’t seem very large to you, take into fact that on top of it all she was pregnant with the Son of God. This is about Jesus coming to earth. This was the truth testament of faith and the removal of fear and completely trust in God. May’s plans weren’t being changed just for the sake of change. Mary’s plans were being changed because it was for the greater good. It was for everybody’s good, including our own.

Remember saints, even if change is not 100% pleasant, they are 100% good.

Mary experienced the greatest change of all, all for God’s name sake. Let us do the same this Christmas season, this Monday, this year.

This week’s song is Mary, Did You Know?

Mary, did you know
That your baby boy will one day walk on water?
Mary, did you know
That your baby boy will save our sons and daughters?
Did you know
That your baby boy has come to make you new?
And this child that you’ve delivered
Will soon deliver you

Mary, did you know
That your baby boy will give sight to a blind man?
Mary, did you know
That your baby boy will calm a storm with his hand?
Did you know
That your baby boy has walked where angels trod?
And when you kiss your little baby
You’ve kissed the face of God
Oh, Mary, did you know?
Mary, did you know?

The blind will see
The deaf will hear
And the dead will live again
The lame will leap
The dumb will speak
The praises of the lamb

Mary, did you know
That your baby boy is Lord of all creation?
Mary, did you know
That your baby boy will one day rule the nations?
Did you know
That your baby boy is heaven’s perfect lamb?
And this sleeping child you’re holding
Is the great I am
